What the Recent Facebook Updates Mean for Your Law Firm
Facebook had a busy week …
First they launched a dedicated app for managing your Facebook Groups. Then they dropped a biggie … an update that may impact they way your content shows on your fans News Feeds.
Below is the breakdown of the updates and what they mean to you:
New Group App – The new dedicated Groups app for iOS and Android should make it easier to communicate with project teams, family and friends. You can still access Groups through Facebook’s website and app. The Groups app just makes it easier to manage the conversations happening within that group and provides an opportunity for you to search for new groups that may be worth joining. This new addition will likely have no impact on your law firm Facebook profile.
News Feed Update Affecting Pages – In an effort to cut through the clutter on News Feeds, Facebook will be using new “volume and content controls” to limit the number of posts from pages that you see in your News Feed.
The following criteria can be deemed too promotional and will be limited:
- Posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an app;
- Posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context; and,
- Posts that reuse the exact same content from ads.
So, what does this mean for your law firm? Well, it emphasizes what we always stress about social media – network … social network. Basically, Facebook (and your Internet marketing company) doesn’t want you to shove your services down your fans throats (your fans don’t really want that either).
The update is expected to take place in early 2015. Our best advice to you, use your account to network and connect with your fans. Just be a cool account to follow. It is OK for the fact that you are a law firm to be secondary to your awesome posts.
