Google Mobile Update Stresses Mobile Friendliness

Google announced yesterday that they will be rolling out another mobile-friendly algorithm update in May. The new update will increase the strength of the mobile-friendly signal within the algorithm. The overall goal as stated by Google is to “help our users find even more pages that are relevant and mobile-friendly“. It’s very important to understand that this algorithm update only affects searches performed on a mobile device and not on desktop.

The original mobile algorithm coined “Mobilegeddon” went live last year on April 21, 2015. Webmasters were highly encouraged to offer a mobile-friendly version of their website or else they would see reduced exposure in the SERP for searches performed on mobile devices. In addition, websites optimized for mobile would receive a notification next to their domain name in the SERP marked as “mobile-friendly”.

Overall, Google wants to reward websites who provide an optimal experience for mobile visitors which we all can appreciate. We have all experienced the frustration of trying to navigate a website that isn’t mobile-friendly on a portable device.

To see how big of an impact this might cause for you, we would recommend looking at your Google Analytics metrics and identifying how much website traffic is coming from mobile devices. If the majority or even a large percentage of traffic is coming from mobile and you don’t have a mobile-friendly website, we would highly recommend making this update. If not, you risk losing all of this valuable traffic and you are not providing the best website experience for your users.

If your website is already mobile-friendly then you have nothing to worry about. If you are not mobile-friendly, or if you want to double-check you are, use the Google mobile-friendly tool and check out Google’s mobile guidelines.
