Search Marketing & AI: The Differences

Outlined brain with AI chip icon highlights AI Automated Marketing on a tech-themed background.

You want more leads. You want to grow the business. So, what is the best role for search marketing for the remainder of 2026 and into 2027?

Executive Overview

Here are the trends we are noticing:

  1. AI search use is increasing every month.  The top AI companies are ChatGPT/OpenAI, Google, and Claude.
  2. Google, with its Gemini AI, has been coming on very strong over the past year.  ChatGPT still has the market lead, but it is decreasing every month.
  3. Traditional search still provides the most traffic to most law firms’ websites.  Yes, AI is coming on strong and more people are using it daily.  But for a law firm that ranks high in both AI and traditional search, traditional search provides 8x to 10x more leads.

Overall, AI is the future. But you cannot ignore traditional search right now, especially if you want to keep getting leads in 2026 and 2027. The good news is that ranking highly in AI search is roughly comparable to ranking highly in traditional search.

Differences in AI vs. Traditional Search

On a scale of 1 to 3 stars, we reviewed each technique that ranks highly in search results.  A critical technique is 3 stars. An important technique is 2 stars.  A lower priority (but nice to do) is one star.

Key Differences
Unique & Original Content ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Critical for Both
Standard search values uniqueness; AI strictly prioritizes proprietary, first-party data it cannot synthesize from public consensus.
In-Depth Content ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Critical for Both
Traditional SEO rewards long-form ultimate guides; AI prefers dense, direct answers tailored to hyper-specific long-tail prompts.
Citations & Brand Mentions ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Important for SEO
Critical for AI
Traditional relies on hyperlinked text; AI actively scans unlinked mentions, brand reputation, and web-wide consensus.
Backlinks ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐ Critical for SEO
Important for AI
Primary authority driver for traditional algorithms; AI values link graphs less than recency, entity trust, and semantic accuracy – but still important.
Logical Heading Hierarchy (H1-H3) ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Critical for Both
Helps standard indexing; serves as structural anchors for AI models to pull exact text blocks directly into generated answers.
Direct Q&A Formatting ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Critical for Both
Helpful for standard featured snippets; essential layout for AI answer engines to isolate direct responses.
E-E-A-T ⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Critical for Both
Unattributed content can still rank in standard search; AI heavily filters sources for verified subject-matter authority.
Schema Markup ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐ Important for SEO
Critical for AI
Beneficial for standard rich snippets; absolute prerequisite for AI to reliably extract structured entity data and facts.
Social Media ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐ Important for Both
While not used directly in the ranking signals, the knock-on effects of having backlinks and robust social media profiles cannot be underestimated.
Title Tags ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐ Important for SEO
Lower Priority for AI
Essential for standard SERP rankings and click-throughs; AI extracts context from full body copy over meta elements. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) relies on traditional title tags for initial page retrieval.
Page Speed & UX ⭐⭐ Important for SEO
Lower Priority for AI
Core ranking signal for standard crawlers; AI web scrapers parse raw text data, making front-end rendering speed low impact. Key is whether the website is indexed.
Meta Description Lower Priority for Both
Drives human clicks on traditional SERPs; largely ignored or rewritten dynamically by AI models.

Conclusion

The takeaway is clear: You don’t need to throw out your SEO playbook to win in the AI era. The core fundamentals – unique content, quality backlinks, title tags, and fast load times – still build the baseline visibility you need today.

But to dominate tomorrow, you need to execute those fundamentals with an AI-first mindset: turning basic schema into detailed entity mapping, converting long-form guides into structured Q&A formats, and building authoritative brand citations across the web.

Master the classic foundation, refine for answer engine extraction, and you’ll stay ahead of the curve as search continues to evolve.
