Lawyer Internet Marketing: How AI Is Changing the Way Clients Find Attorneys

In many ways, lawyers are somewhat like electricians or plumbers. They are someone whose services you need occasionally, but with whom many people do not have a one-to-one relationship. Before the 1990s, you “let your fingers do the walking” and consulted the Yellow Pages. Search engines simplified this in the early 2000s. By 2005, Google had become the clear market leader. Most people have only distant memories of AltaVista and Yahoo, and it has been years since anyone asked Jeeves anything. Between 2005 and 2024, Google maintained a 85%-95% share of the global search market. Its dominance was so established that it became a verb as people began Googling questions.

Google’s dominance is now being challenged by the rise of AI models. As computer users become more comfortable delegating tasks to AI, they are increasingly turning to platforms such as Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini for answers. Since 2024, even Google now provides an AI Overview in response to a standard search. Instead of simply presenting a list of websites, Google and AI platforms increasingly provide AI-generated answers that summarize information rather than giving a list of links where the information can be found. This often gives users their answer before they click through to a law firm’s website. This shift impacts how lawyer internet marketing and SEO work. At PaperStreet, we are helping our clients retool their digital marketing plans to seamlessly work in a post-Google-dominant world.

From Search Engines to AI Assistants

Any lawyer who has ever had a really good paralegal understands the value of a good assistant. With the rise of AI, many people are discovering the art of delegation. Delegation is addictive. Once you get a taste of it, you want more. The availability of AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini has fed this trend. AI search is beginning to supplant traditional search in much the same way as Google made the Yellow Pages obsolete.

Potential clients are increasingly asking AI questions directly, such as:

  • “Who is the best divorce lawyer near me?”
  • “Do I need a lawyer for a car accident claim?”
  • “What is the process to file a bankruptcy?”
  • “Why do I need a will?”

Traditional search engines did not attempt to answer these questions. Instead, they responded by providing a list of websites where users could find answers or relevant information. While search engines occasionally displayed featured snippets or other direct-answer features, their primary function was to direct users to relevant sources. AI search tools operate differently. They answer the question, or at least attempt to by synthesizing information from multiple sources before the user ever visits a website. This creates a new challenge for lawyer internet marketing, as the client may not need to click your link to get their questions answered.

AI Is Becoming Your New Referral Source

AI is the new digital gatekeeper. Handled correctly, it can be your new best referral source. AI does not search the internet the way humans do. Instead, it analyzes large amounts of internet-based text, retrieves relevant information, and synthesizes it into a single answer rather than presenting a list of links for the user to review.

The original goal of SEO was to capture the algorithm’s attention. That part hasn’t changed with AI-based search. AI platforms typically provide citations to supporting sources, allowing users to verify the information and explore the topic further. The end goal of AI-based search is to be cited as the source for the information used in the answer. Several factors influence whether a firm gets mentioned, such as:

  • Strong website content
  • Clear practice area pages
  • Consistent online presence
  • Reviews and authority signals

With AI-based search, credibility matters more than keywords. AI systems are designed to identify and synthesize trustworthy information, not simply match search terms. As a result, thin content and superficial SEO tactics are becoming less effective. The sources most likely to be cited are those that demonstrate real expertise, provide substantive information, and convey strong trust signals through both their content and their overall online presence.

What Law Firms Must Do Differently

For the last 20 years, much of law firm marketing has been geared toward pleasing and appeasing Google algorithms. The rise of AI-based search has changed this paradigm. Being consistently cited as a source in an AI-based search for legal services or advice requires you to think differently. Consider the following:

  • Create content that answers client questions: Most AI-based searches take the form of questions. They are often the same questions that you have been hearing in consultations with clients for years. Create content designed to directly answer these questions. Use the questions themselves as your title and/or section headers.
  • Build authority in practice areas: Go beyond just a practice area page. Create supplementary pieces for each practice area that go in-depth on related subtopics of that area. This helps demonstrate your expertise in the field. Again, remember to answer the questions potential clients usually ask.
  • Improve website structure and clarity: As you build out your website, remember to keep it organized. Make sure that both AI search engines as well as humans can quickly and easily find what they are looking for. Content that never gets seen or used was simply wasted words. Digital organization requires ongoing effort. Make sure to schedule regular audits of your site to clean up and remove anything that is no longer relevant.
  • Maintain accurate online profiles and directories: Do not overlook online profiles and directories. Nobody cares about the young lawyer award that you won 15 years ago when you were new at this. They want to know what you are doing now. Both clients and AI-based searches look for signs of freshness. Also, make sure your contact information is consistent and up to date across all platforms.

AI-based searches are great at detecting search-engine tricks, and they do not reward them. Take the time to build out client-centered content. If you focus on creating content that clients find helpful, you will also be creating content that gets you noticed and cited in AI-based searches.

What All of This Means for Law Firm Websites

The rise of AI is a game-changer. Since ChatGPT announced its original model in November 2022, speculation about the implications for businesses has been abundant. For law firms concerned about their digital marketing strategies, several things are clear:

  • The SEO tricks and shortcuts firms have been using to rank well with Google’s algorithms won’t work in the new environment.
  • Legal websites must be well-organized, deeper, and more authoritative.
  • Practice-area pages should answer the questions real clients ask.
  • Attorney bios, credentials, reviews, case results, FAQs, and local relevance matter because, before the new digital gatekeeper cites you as an authority, it needs to be convinced that you are one.
  • The goal is no longer just ranking on Google. It is becoming a trusted source that AI tools may cite or summarize.

AI-based searches are poised to do to traditional SEO what the internet did to the Yellow Pages. In the 1980s, many bar associations were still debating whether it was okay for attorneys to have anything more than a line in the yellow pages. Eventually, that wall fell down, and attorney yellow-page advertising became as ubiquitous as the directory itself. In the early 1990s, most consumers would never have believed that by 2015, most major telephone companies would stop automatically distributing the Yellow Pages. Yet, the rise of the internet and search engines upended traditional print-based phone books. AI-powered search is poised to relegate traditional search to the same historic dustbin.

At PaperStreet, our goal is to keep our clients ahead of the curve. We know that firms that adapt early will have a competitive advantage. A bonus is that getting attention in AI-based searches does not require gimmicks or tricks. The secret is using your website to showcase your expertise and knowledge. Firms that consistently publish helpful, authoritative content are more likely to be recognized as trustworthy sources by both traditional search engines and AI-powered search tools. While the technology may be changing, the underlying principle remains the same: Demonstrate your value, answer your clients’ questions, and make it easy for prospective clients to understand why they should hire you.
