Do you want to display the highest quality logo possible on your website? One that will not be pixelated on small screens or higher resolution devices? Of course you do. Keep reading.

The Problem

With great power, comes great design.

Due to the amount of devices able to access the web today, the number of resolutions and screen sizes your logo can be seen on is massive. Web design has to adapt to the ever changing environment that new technology creates.

Consider this analogy, “designing a static site today is the equivalent of a driving snow-mobile in Jamaica.” The idea sounds fun, but we all understand that the functionality and usability is not there. To that same note, we may not always want to switch cars (or designs) to suit a set number of devices, such as iPads, iPhones, or televisions.

So, What Is the Solution?

The only solution we have against designing for devices today is called future proofing. This is designing your websites in a flexible format which allows it to be easily adapted to its environment, whether that be a computer, iPhone or tablet.

It’s the equivalent to designing your website the way you would design flubber.

While future proofing has become the standard in most web design projects, one overlooked aspect is considering responsive images in your design.

Have you ever visited a website on your cellphone and everything looked amazing except the images? This happens because there was a lack of support on responsive images during the design process. There is no official method that best solves this issue, but there are several methods you may be interested in trying.

The Scalable Method

Some designers prefer to create what is called a Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) in place of the logo. These are vector based images that can be easily resized to fit a number of devices. They help increase website performance because of the way developers are allowed to embed the images in your website. These images may look amazing on every device, but they are best served as animated or large logos.

Most logos are vector-based, so this is a fairly simple process, which will add tons of value to your overall web presence.

The one major downfall of this method is lack of browser support in many older browsers and some mobile browsers. However, this won’t account for any large number of your site viewers today.

The Adaptive Method

The second method is always the more adaptive method, and the method I recommend to first time responsive sites designers. This is the adaptive approach to image handling, which loads serve several images in place of your logo and displays the highest quality version of that logo based on the screen size or resolution of the device you are using.

Your goal with any redesigned logo is to optimize your images for devices such as Macbook Pros and the new Macbook Pros, which have the same screen size as older devices, but at a much higher resolution, which creates that pixelated appearance and better future proofing your website.
