The Law Offices of T. Martin Knopes, a Crestview, Florida criminal defense firm, has just launched an Essentials website.

As a former assistant state attorney, Martin Knopes understands how to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a case, through the eyes of both a prosecutor and a defense lawyer. Pleading a case out is never his first choice — in fact, he considers every other possibility first, before even thinking about a plea agreement. While results in a criminal case can never be guaranteed, this approach has enabled him to obtain positive results in many challenging cases.

He applies the same rigorous methodology to family law, personal injury and wrongful death cases.

One of the positive aspects of WordPress is the thousands of user-created plugins that are readily available to help users accomplish almost any function imaginable. Rather than waiting on a new feature to be added to WordPress, users can quickly search the WordPress Plugin Directory for current plug-ins, or even code their own. Granted, some plugins are better than others, so I urge users to exercise some discretion when sifting through the directory. Many a hacked site has been the result of a poorly coded plugin. Rather than having dozens of plugins installed of various levels of quality, I find it’s best to use as few plugins as possible, creating less potential points of failure.

Over time, PaperStreet has compiled a list of reliable plugins that we install for many of our custom WordPress themes:

SEO – “Wordpress SEO by Yoast”
We install this plugin by default on all sites. It allows you to set all SEO-related options, and preview how your page’s title/description will look on a Google search result page.
http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/

Backup – “BackWPUp”
All of your WordPress site’s data is stored in a database, that should be backed up on a regular basis. The best available plugin we have found is BackWPUp, which provides many different storage options, including sending the backup by email, uploading by FTP, uploading to Dropbox, uploading to RS Cloud Files, etc.
http://wordpress.org/plugins/backwpup/

Preventing Spam – “Akismet”
Akismet detects spam comments and files them as spam automatically, so you have much less work involved with approving or denying comments. We highly recommend that all WordPress sites with blog comments enabled sign up for an Akismet API key. It is installed by default on all sites, but requires registration for a monthly fee if you are making money off of your site.

http://akismet.com/

Custom Fields – “Advanced Custom Fields”
Most sites have extra information beyond the body text and headline that should be editable. We often use the “Advanced Custom Fields” plugin, which makes it easy to add things like more text areas to a home page, or photos and aside text to bios.
http://wordpress.org/plugins/advanced-custom-fields/

301 Redirects – “Quick Page/Post Redirect”
Usually when you want to redirect a page, it involves some manual (and technical) editing of an htaccess file. Using a redirect plugin such as this one, it is as simple as entering the old URL, and new URL, and clicking add.
http://wordpress.org/plugins/quick-pagepost-redirect-plugin/

HTML Sitemap
For sites that have an HTML sitemap (usually linked in the footer), this can be easily created using a shortcode that generates the page list automatically. The following plugin has the option to exclude pages (such as confirmation and error pages). There are a few other plugins accomplishing the same task that work just as well:
http://wordpress.org/plugins/html-sitemap/

Drag n’ Drop Page Re-Ordering – “Simple Page Ordering”
Page re-ordering is cumbersome by default, requiring you to manually enter an order number. There are a few decent plugins available that allow you to drag-n-drop to re-order. This one works well:
http://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-page-ordering/

Table Editing Tools
If your site’s content requires editing or adding tables, there are buttons available in the TinyMCE editor that are not shown by default in WordPress.

MCE Table Buttons – This is lightweight, and has high ratings.
http://wordpress.org/plugins/mce-table-buttons/

TinyMCE Advanced – Allows you to drag’n’drop additional available HTML editing tools to the toolbar:
http://wordpress.org/plugins/tinymce-advanced/

Your business may have a blog and a few social media pages, but are you truly utilizing these outlets to your advantage? There are a few simple guidelines you should be following if you wish to gain the most exposure on the web.

Take Advantage of Every Applicable Social Media Site

You may think that having a Facebook page is enough to be considered active on social media, but the reality is that you are missing out on a huge audience. There are conversations happening beyond the realm of Facebook all over the web. If you have the chance to become a part of one of those conversations, then why not take advantage of it? Your clients have preferences. Some may prefer Twitter to Facebook, while others may only have a LinkedIn account. As a leader in your industry, you should really take advantage of as many networks as possible; don’t miss an opportunity to connect with someone because you refuse to join another social media network. Of course, you will want to be realistic about your audience and your capability. For instance, someone without the desire or ability to post videos may not consider YouTube a necessary account to have.

Update Regularly and Come up with a Schedule

When it comes to blogging and social media, you should be posting on a scheduled basis. Google tracks your posting patterns, and when you adhere to a specific and regular pattern Google will notice and increase your ranking. On a more personal note, scheduled postings give your target audience a timeline, so that they know when to expect your next post.

To make updating less time consuming, you can sign up for a HootSuite account which allows you to post to all of your social media accounts and your blog simultaneously. Simply enter all of your updates into the HootSuite application in one sitting, and schedule out when you want your posts to go live. Technically, you could easily spend 30 minutes on Monday to update posts for an entire week, and leave HootSuite to update the posts according to your specified schedule.

Don’t Just Post Updates, Add to the Conversation

Social media and blogging is not just a means to brag about yourself or share updates about your business. Contrarily, it is about engaging in a conversation with consumers. Beyond merely sharing your business successes, you should be engaging with your consumers and peers alike by responding to questions or comments, and lending your knowledge and expertise.

Quora.com is a great tool for connecting with consumers and establishing authority. The site allows you to answer questions related to your field. This in turn will help establish your credibility as a business owner and expand your networking options. Similarly, LinkedIn has group and discussion board features to facilitate conversation, and Twitter #hashtags allow for direct communication with other users.

Look for People Interested in What You Offer

It may seem difficult to add value to a conversation if you cannot find the conversation to begin with. Luckily, you can easily search on Twitter for hashtags that relate to your business. Reply to relevant tweets and spark a conversation possibly offering a solution to a problem or insight to a topic you are familiar with. Additionally, there are free tools available on the web that can help you find influential people to follow across social media networks. Use these tools to find people who will benefit from your service and reach out to them. This may take a little more work, but it can reap great benefits.

Google Penguin Algorithm Update

On May 22nd 2013, Google rolled out its next generation of the Penguin algorithm update affecting its searches. Based on the magnitude of the update, it definitely warranted the information listed below.

Penguin 2.0 is all about Link Quality

At PaperStreet, we pride ourselves on the quality of links that we establish for your campaign. The quality of these links is one of the major factors that Google takes into consideration when evaluating a website. Google prefers high quality trusted links that lead authority to your website, over a high quantity of less valued links. In other words, quality is greater than quantity.

Recommendations

While most websites have not been affected by this update (Google reports only 2.3% of US queries), we have noticed a trend:

Directories are now occupying most of the top slots of any given phrase. We have always recognized the power of these listings, however, they have been given even more importance after the update. If you want to rank high, it has become almost necessary to be part of good directories. Some high ranking directories we recommend include:

Avvo.com

Superpages.com

Yelp.com

YP.com

Findlaw.com

Lawyers.com

Superlawyers.com

Other specific legal directories like HG.org

Google Local (being on Google Maps) is SUPER important at this stage. Google is fully taking these local searches into account when calculating the ranking status of any top 10 phrase result.

Google Authorship is now consistently showing up in results. (This is when the small thumbnail image of the author shows up next to the article. For example, when you Google “Law Firm Web Presence” an image of Peter Boyd will appear next to his article). Authorship is attracting even more visits than the top rankings above it. Complying with these factors and taking the Google Plus factor into any SEO campaign is another extremely high recommendation of ours.

Next Steps

We cannot stress enough that in order to stay highly competitive in a SEO campaign, it will be mandatory to make certain updates to your site. It is obvious that Google is stressing that we use their products, i.e. the Google Authorship, Google+ and Google Local.

PaperStreet’s Stance

We will continue to build the strongest campaigns possible for our clients. We will continually research the best keyword phrases, and build quality links for our SEO websites. We will also vow to keep our clients abreast of any changes in the industry.

Necessary Client Work

In order to stay competitive with the ever-evolving internet market, we need our SEO clients to help us maintain their relevance and authority. To garner the highest rankings, it is important to approve and move forward with all of our recommendations. We recommend establishing a strong web presence via:

A Google Plus account;

A Google Local account;

Other Social Media accounts;

A Blog;

Top Quality Directory Listings (list above);

Weekly content writing for your website.

Questions?

It is truly a pleasure working with our SEO clients to help gain a competitive web presence. SEO is a symbiotic relationship. We have just as much of a vested interest in a campaigns’ success as much as our clients want it to succeed.

Our team is always striving to achieve the best results in an honest manner. If you would like to speak with us further about the Penguin update, or about other steps you might take to strengthen any SEO campaign, do not hesitate to contact us. If anything, we encourage and welcome it! We are here to help.
