The HIV Education and Law Project, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization located on Miami Beach, Florida that was founded in 1994 to provide assistance and advocacy to South Florida’s low income and disenfranchised HIV positive community. Through the combined efforts of our full-time staff attorney, volunteer attorneys, corporate volunteers and law students, HELP has assisted nearly 400 individuals and families.
HELP has provided free legal service in matters of public benefits, discrimination, wills & trusts, the rights of the incarcerated and landlord/tenant disputes. The organizations success has been made possible by national grants, private donors and working relationships with related community-based organizations, and various in-kind donations. Throughout its history HELP has offered its services to the entire HIV-positive community.
To qualify for services, a person must be in financial despair, which is determined on a case by case basis employing flexible financial guidelines. The faces we see in our office are the changing faces of AIDS. The young mother of two, heterosexual teenagers, persons recently released from prison, and the boy next door. AIDS does not discriminate, yet our clients face multiple legal challenges due to illness, poverty, race and gender. HELP has sought to focus its services on Miami’s minority, and immigrant communities, which currently face the highest rate (almost 40%) of new infection and are among the least likely to have access to the financial resources necessary for successful litigation.
